Black Freshwater Pearls
Black pearls are frequently referred to as Tahitian black pearls. Black freshwater pearls before the process of culturing was used were extremely rare and very hard to come by. Tahiti and the pacific islands were the black pearl oyster is found that is used in culturing black pearls.
The culturing process of the black pearl still produces a small yield as they are still rather scarce. These pearls cannot be mass produced. The black pearls from oysters are still limited because they are very sensitive to the changing water conditions and climate, so the process of culturing them can sometimes fail.
A pearl that is much more abundant would be the Chinese freshwater cultured pearl. Cultured pearls are divided in two categories. One results when the mussel is implanted with a bead, which is a polished sphere of shell. They are grown one at a time. Non beaded black freshwater pearls are grown in the mantle of the mussel and up to 25 grafts may be implanted at once.
In resent years the quality of these pearls has improved greatly. Today they are able to produce nearly round pearls were as in the past they produced a look more like rice shaped pebbles. The worlds largest producer of freshwater cultured pearls is China. Many lakes that were previously used by the cultured pearl industry are no longer suitable due to water pollution.
But the cultured pearl industry is thriving today thanks to improved pearl farming techniques such as crossing different species of mussels.
Today you don't have to be rich to afford Tahitian black pearl jewelry. Cultured black freshwater pearls are more widely available than their ocean pearl counterparts and no one has to know you did not pay a fortune for them.
